When venturing into the wilderness or prepping for emergencies, having multiple methods of starting a fire can save your life.
While matches seem an obvious choice, wind and wet weather can quickly render them useless.
Instead, every survival kit should contain these two types of lighters plus a reliable fire starter:
Waterproof Lighter – These lighters have O-ring seals to keep fuel from evaporating and the wick-lit.Â
Popular options include stormproof peel ‘n stick lighters or floating lighters designed to work even when soaked.
Refillable Lighter – Refillable lighters allow you to keep the fire source going over the long-term.
Look for stainless steel lighters that are durable and wind-resistant.
Compressed Fire Plugs – These compact, lightweight fire starters burn for up to 8 minutes regardless of wind or wet conditions.
They have an indefinite shelf life and one plug can ignite kindling to start a campfire or stove.
Unlike lighters, the fire plugs aren’t rendered useless if they get wet or damaged.
Practice using these tools in a non-emergency situation so that you’ll be prepared when the time comes.
